Van Morrison – T.B. Sheets | Raw and Bluesy, Cold and Real, Funky as Hell!

VanMorrisonTBSheets

Van Morrison at his best.  Off of the New York Sessions ‘67 album.  The entire album is well worth the price of addmission, but T.B. Sheets stands out.  Over 9 minutes of Van slanging smooth funk and soul.  The first time I heard it, I listed to it 4 times in a row.  A half hour well spent in my opinion.

Note: This is a lower quality file as to cut the file size down.  Buy the full cut in all of its glory here, http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-sessions-67/id183330860

Rolling Stones – Moonlight Mile | One you don’t hear everyday (or ever) but soooo good

Keith Richards

I love hidden gems when it comes to music.  I would have to say Moonlight Mile by the Stones is 10 karat ice!  The folksy feel reminds me of Van Morrison but would feel just as comfortable on a 2009 hipster indie folk album.  The strings pull the mood together along with piano rain drops and guitar string shooting stars.  OK that was cheesy, but this is an exceptionally hippie Stones cut if there is such a thing.

Loggins & Messina | Chillaxing Old School

I have been neglecting the 70’s for too long on cutbucket.  So what better way to chillax than pump up the Loggins & Messina.  When I think of Kenny Loggins, I think Footloose and Danger Zone from Top Gun.  Although those songs are classics, his best work is arguably while recording with Jim Messina as Loggins & Messina.    They laid down some sick jams in their day.  I have included a couple here for your pleasure.

Note:  I “high”ly suggest you listen to these in the right state of mind…. you with me?

The Golden Filter – Thunderbird | Be prepared to dance!

If a song makes my 3 year old son burst into kung-foo inspired rave dancing (minus glow sticks) I know its good shit!

What I love about The Golder Filter is that you can actually hear a “live band” performing the music in your mind.  It has just enough texture to convince you that they dropped each track in a studio rather than contriving it on an MacBook Pro.

OK… are you with me????  I am going to get deep on your ass with this one.  See if you can follow along and if your head explodes, it’s not my fault.

In my opinion, the 2:40 mark of Thunderbird concludes what just was a synthesizer homage to Pink Floyd.  What ensued previous to the 2:40 minute mark was an almost note by note inspiration of the synthesizer solo on Pink Floyd’s song Have a Cigar from the Wish You Were Here album.

The best part is, the a fore mentioned Pink Floyd synthesizer solo from Have a Cigar ends at exactly the 4:20 minute mark.  I am not a consipiracy theorist… but come on… 4:20?????  Sick!!!

If you don’t follow… Sorry.  I still think you will like Thunderbird from The Golden Filter.  Please register on their site for the free download, http://thegoldenfilter.com/

Chuck Berry, The true King of Rock and Roll | Some of Chuck’s less mainstream but equally classic cuts

Chuck Berry is HANDS DOWN the King!!!  When it comes to Rock and Roll, very few have come close to his influence on rock.  It is hard to believe that it was August 1, 1955 when “Maybellene” reached #5 on Billboard’s Best Sellers chart and topped the R&B chart for eleven weeks.

That means Chuck has rocked us for over 54 Years!!!! Unbelievable when you think about it.  And to this day, Maybellene will rock you just as hard as it rocked grandma and grandpa (actually it kicked their ass hard).

Below are a few of my favorite Chuck Berry cuts that don’t generally show up in the typical “best of” rotation.   Every music lover should have Chuck Berry: The Chess Box (Box Set) in their collection.   It will keep you up and rocking all night.

Listen: Chuck Berry – Tulane

Listen: Chuck Berry – Woodpecker
