Spring Mixtape :: 2 of 2
About to drop the bomb on your weekend!!! If you don’t find something on this mix you like…. oh well, too bad for you.
Ratatat :: 17 Years – Dope stuff from Ratatat. Just getting warmed up… (btw… can’t wait for their new album. May 18)
Gorillaz :: On Melancholy Hill – I am loving this new album. Chill song for what’s about to come…
The XX :: VCR (Matthew Dear Remix) – Stepping up the energy slightly. One of the best XX remixes I have heard yet… and there are tons out there.
Blue Scholars :: New People (Empire of the Sun Remix) – You can’t help but MC along after the 3rd time you hear this one. Catchy stuff!!
Crown City Rockers :: Balance (feat. Scarub) – Straight outa Oakland. Not Too$hort gangsta… but sick base line groove from the Bay.
ChocQuibTown :: El Bombo (Toquemen el Bombo) – Time for Maragaritas!!!
Wailing Souls :: Shark Attack – Is it 4:20 yet? Now that’s a pool party!!!
Billy Ocean :: Caribbean Queen – Billy is still the Friar of Fresh. I think of dark tanned bodies when I hear this song. Love it!
Vampire Weekend :: Holiday – This song makes me want to order a Dos Equis from a beach bar that exists in my daydreams…. ice cold with a lime…mmmmmm!!!
Ra Ra Riot :: Can You Tell – Penny loafers and poped collars punk
Free Energy :: Free Energy – Listen to this one if you are lacking energy. Free Energy has plenty to dish out. Love the 70’s Camero guitar licks… think Cars.
Two Door Cinema Club :: Something Good Can Work (The Twelves Remix) – BOOM!!!! Now we are shaking rumps… “Let’s get this started girl”
The Beach Boys :: Wouldn’t It Be Nice (The Girls Can Hear Us Remix) – Usually not a fan of retro remixes…but… this is a perfect summer party jam.
Crystal Castles :: Crimewave (Midnight Conspiracy Remix) – Pure remix 80’s new wave magic. The Daft Punk beat at 1:36 is LEGIT!!!!!
wait what (the notorious b.i.g. vs. the xx) :: one more chance for a heart to skip a beat – This wait what mashup will make you say “wait… what?” VERY EXPLICIT (I warned you… but you still listened. Don’t blame me.)
Animal Collective :: Daily Routine (Phaseone Remix) – Ending it all with a chill ass remix. My fav Collective mix to date.

Top 40 Songs of 2009: 31-40
This is the first of 4 posts with 10 songs each which will make up the “Top 40 Songs of 2009 – According to Coach” at cutbucket.com. Picking 40 songs out of all of the great music that has come out in 2009 proved to be a tremendous challenge which is a testament to all of the new and wonderful sounds that filled my ears this year.
The thing to remember here is that these selections are my opinion based on many things including “my taste”. The beauty of music is that we all have our own taste and style of sound we prefer. 2009 was an exceptional year regardless of your taste and my selections are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all of the great music released this year. Whatever your taste is, there are far more than 40 songs which can tell the story of music in 2009. What an amazing musical time we are living in. The maturity of the internet, while still far from perfect, has allowed so many more artists to find a channel in which to be heard over. It’s a great time to be a fan of music.
The criteria that I considered were the following -
Number of Listens – How many times did I play each song (based on tracking within iTunes). Of course, songs that came out later in the year were weighed against the available length of time listen to each song.
Sticky Factor - Did each song have the ability to “stick in my head” so to speak.? Was it recognizable again immediately after the first couple of listens? Did I find myself humming the tune in my mind days after hearing it?
Overall Production Value – This speaks for itself…
Uniqueness – We don’t want no posers here.
Single Song Value – This was one of the hardest factors in my consideration. Was the song strong enough to stand on it’s own without being part of an album. In the day and age of single song downloads this is very important. When picking the top “Songs” this has to be a factor. If I were to pick the top “Albums” this would be a completely different mix of artists.
NOTE :: As it relates to Single Song Value I had a very tough challenge placing the songs from Animal Collective’s release “Merriweather Post Pavilion”. To truly appreciate the outstanding quality of their album I feel it needs to be judged as just that… AN ALBUM. It is by far one of the top 3 of the year!!! What is so special about Merriweather is it’s value as a work of art as a complete album in the day and age of the single song download. That being said, none of the individual songs jumped into a natural spot within this list. Therefore, I have included what I believe are the strongest singles from the album and put them at the bottom of the list. This by no means represents the value of this album, I just didn’t know what else to do. I highly suggest you listen to the entire album start to finish if you are going to listen to it at all. SORRY FOR THE LONG EXPLANATION. I FELT IT WAS DUE.
NOW ON TO THE LIST….
31. About Face – Grizzly Bear, Veckatimest
32. Tell Me True – Sarah Jarosz, Song Up In Her Head
33. Soldier (Feat. Santigold) – N.E.R.D.

36. Ghosts N Stuff – Deadmau5, Ghosts N Stuff – Single
37. Higher Than the Stars – The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Higher Than the Stars
38. Things Will Never Be the Same Again – JJ, JJ N° 2

Blakroc | Black Keys gettin by with a little help from their hip-hop friends
We are always looking for new sound and musical experiences here at cutbucket. Thus, when I heard Black Keys were teaming up with some hip-hop heavy hitters we were all over it. We went as far as setting Google Cal reminders for the release date, which by no coincidence was “Black” Friday. Nice marketing nuance.
First impressions on a handful of tracks were slightly less enthusiastic than had been expected. Some tracks leave me feeling like the last true good hip-hop/rock collaboration was the Judgment Night soundtrack. As we listened on we were happy to find some serious sick cuts.
The tracks that still maintain and showcase the vintage Black Keys blues rock sound while fusing the flow of a fine selection of MC’s are wonderful. Some tracks seem to lose the Keys signature and that is a shame. That being said, well worth the wait for the few gems!!
By far our favorite cut is What You Do to Me. Super swanky flow by Dan Auerbach on the chorus make you want light a smoke and sport a fedora. Dan’s keyboard lick that echoes throughout kills!! Nicole Wray’s sexy voice is the glue that binds the hard hitting verses by Billy Danze and Jim Jones. As a total package, OUTSTANDING!!!
Note: Make sure you check out the great video webisodes of the making of the album. www.blakroc.com/videos.html

Q-tip | Kills it with or without his Tribe
Q-tip is a legend…………………….. um, I am at a loss for words………… Boom! Done!
(I am ending the post early so I can listen to more Q-tip. You should also stop whatever you’re doing and listen…)
Below are 3 lesser known Q-tip jams that shouldn’t be. Can you believe they stretch 17 years!! Like I said…. Kills It!
Download: A Tribe Called Quest – Check The Rhime (1991)
Download: Busta Rhymes & Q-Tip – For the Nasty (2005)
2 for the weekend – N.E.R.D. and Big Boi
Here are 2 sick cuts by two big playas in the hip-hop game. N.E.R.D. and Big Boi.
The N.E.R.D. song features Santigold, and we know everything she touches turns to “gold”. This track has a little reggae, hip-hop and break beat that all work perfectly together.
The Big Boi cut should be off his “should be released by now” album, but it’s not. Has everything you would expect from 1/2 of the duo AKA Outkast. They need to hook us up with some new shi!. Until then this will do just fine.
Listen: N.E.R.D. – Soldier (Feat. Santigold)
Listen: Big Boi – Shine Blockas Ft. Gucci Mane

As Summer Winds Down…
As summer winds down (everywhere but here in Arizona) I’m savoring the number of pool days left. A few more backyard BBQ parties are certainly in order before we start the ridiculously long holiday season. So here are a few songs to add to your pool party mix. Get out your blenders and mix up some margaritas, throw some Coronas on ice and don’t forget the sunblock.

Listen: The Dirtbombs – Wreck My Flow
Listen: Stellastarr* – Graffiti Eyes

Are you going out this weekend? Well if you want a song that mixes hip-hop and electro with a seriously “Awesome” grinding beat and deep bass kick, this cut will make you want to drink vodka with your favorite mixer till 3 in the mo’nin. Holla back now!

Outside Lands and Well Wishes for Yauch
First, a quick thanks to Coach for the guest post access!
I haven’t been to Lollapalooza or Coachella. I haven’t even been to that many concerts in my day. However, when I heard about the Outside Lands Festival – a 3-day concert in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco in August – I instantly became a festival goer. With Pearl Jam, DMB and Beasties headlining, along with Silversun Pickups, TV on the Radio and about 60 other great bands, it should be ridiculous.
Just yesterday, though, we heard that Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on his salivary gland, and the Beastie Boys have cancelled their upcoming shows, including Outside Lands. I’m obviously disappointed, but happy to hear that it is totally isolated and very treatable. Here’s the Beastie Boys’ video announcement of the diagnosis on YouTube:
So, here’s a shout out to Yauch with my all-time favorite Beasties cut.
Listen: Beastie Boys – Jimmy James
In an effort to familiarize myself with some more bands that will be playing at Outside Lands, I’ve been doing some homework. Here are a couple of gems I’ve found so far. The Zion I track is a great summer jam and the Calexico track just oozes road trip south of the border. Thanks, again, Dave for allowing me to share! Enjoy.
